Hydrotropic solubilization involves addition of large amount of a second solute to increase the aqueous solubility of the first solute. This study examines the mechanism of hydrotropic solubilization using the riboflavin-nicotinamide system. Sodium benzoate is one of the widely used hydrotropic agents and has demonstrated the enhancement in aqueous solubilities of a large number of poorly water-soluble drugs. Nevertheless some aliphatic compounds such as short sodium alkanoates or alkyl sulphates show also a hydrotropic behaviour as it was observed for aromatic derivatives.
